This is what it sounds like to count from 1 to in binary music courtesy of Jake Joaquin. It inspired me to draw a picture, so I could see what binary counting looks like as well:. Jake named his creation the Binary Clicker. The song has evenly-spaced notes, each note representing one 8-bit binary number in the sequence from 1 to How can you represent 8 bits with one note? But you can choose one representative bit from each number and still convey some information about it.

Each bit position is assigned a different toneascending in pitch from the least significant bit position to the most significant bit position. The tone played on each beat is that associated with the bit that changes from 0 to 1 — there is one and only one such bit per count. The diagram is a bar chart depicting the binary numbers from 1 to The height of each bar corresponds to the bit position of the least significant 1-bit in each count.

You could also think of it as the length of the suffix of the binary number from its lowest 1-bit down. For example, 40, which is 2has a suffix ofwhich is 4 units tall:. Numbers that end in the same binary string have the same bar height. For example, 48, which is 2andwhich is 2both end in The diagram is full of symmetry.

You can do this seven times in all, each time generating symmetric halves. The count is not included in the diagram. It would be a 0-height bar because it has no 1 bits. To appreciate this, play the tune and follow along in the chart. I hear a note melody well, more like a metronome beatmarked by the red numbers in the chart. Those are the decimal values of the counter on those beats.Want to save money on sound effects?

A Sound Effect is a wonderful resource for indie sound effects libraries. On top of that, it has some of the finest sound design, film and game audio interviews!Sound is vibrations that travel though a medium usually air from one point to another, caused by rapid changes pressure within that medium. When we shout, our vocal cords vibrate rapidly, causing the pressure in the air surrounding them to increase and decrease, producing a pressure aka sound wave.

This wave travels though the air.

Sci-Fi Computer Interface Sound ~ Gaming Sound Effects

When we shout louder, what we are really doing in increasing the amplitude of the wave that is produced. When we talk in a high pitch voice, what we are really doing is vibrating our vocal chords more rapidly, causing the frequency of the waves to increase. This means that in order for a computer to be able to store and play back sound, we need to be able to convert these sound waves in to a format the can represent both the volume amplitude and pitch frequency of the sound being recorded.

When capturing sound, we need to be able to plot the both the amplitude and frequency of the sound for each point in it time the recording. This can being easily achieved if we simply measure the amplitude of the wave at a set interval of time.

The time interval we choose is known as the sampling rate. We can then use this recorded data to plot against a graph, as seen on the previous page. Source — Wikipedia. These measurements are passed to the computer software that is used to save the recorded voltages. Microphone Demo Animation video YouTube. Now we have the voltage for each measurement, all we need to do in order to store the data in binary is simply store a stream of binary numbers.

At the start of the file we record the sampling rate, and then the rest of the audio file contains a stream of binary numbers, each of which correspond to the voltage at a given time. As you can see by the waves below, we are now going to need to record positive and negative numbers in binary. For the sake of this simple example, we are going to cheat and simply add an extra bit at the start of the binary to indicate positive or negative 0 for positive, 1 for negative.

Please note that the data above is far more simple than an actual sound file. Sound files usually have a sample rate of about 44, samples per second When you record sound, you are converting the original analogue signal to a digital binary format. Through this process you lose some of the sound quality. As can be seen below, the digital wave that is recorded is different to the original analogue sound wave, because you are only sampling the wave a certain number of times per second.

If you want to increase the quality of the recorded audio, you need to increase the sample rate. Once you have drawn the sound wave, take the sample voltages at each point and record them on the sample values table sheet.

High Amplitude Wave.Drones is a freely downloadable, royalty free collection of drone sound effects and atmospheric soundscapes crafted by Red Fog. Red Fog: Well, thank you for having me on board for this sample pack, I really had fun designing the sounds.

All the sounds in this library, like all of my music as a matter of fact, have been created with digital tools only. No analog synthesizers nor samplers, no hardware effects, purely digital tools on a computer. A good friend of mine also has the almighty Kyma Paca System that I can use from time to time in his studio, so some of the sounds were created with that as well. Possibilities are then endless. Do you imagine the sounds being used on the big screen, music projects, or something else?

Red Fog: Of course, I really hope the sounds are going to inspire other artists and sound designers in their work, no matter where and how they gonna use them. That was my main goal with this project. So I would say that my biggest source of inspiration was to give inspiration to others. Inspire them to not only use the sounds, but also to explore further more with them, transform them even more deeply and use them as a source of creativity.

In the end, if the sounds are used for music, a soundtrack for a film, a commercial, or anything else, I will be happy and my mission will be completed. So movies are a huge source of inspiration for me. I also really enjoyed the dreadful and dark atmospheric sound design of Beyond The Black Rainbow. Those are just a few, though. I could really go on for hours….

A brand new territory for me to explore. But, back to the favorite technique question, I can easily say that granular synthesis is by far my favorite way of creating sounds.

Red Fog: I did the sound design in some projects like commercials, short films, and a few art installations, but this is my first true sound pack release. And, of course, my drone ambient project Red Fog.

Red Fog: Thanks again to you for giving me the chance to release this sound pack on 99Sounds and I really hope to release more in the near future! Thanks and enjoy the sounds.
